The WC String Quartet plays everything from Mozart to Jazz to Sufi chants. An innovative group, the members are all fine classical musicians, but are also adept at improvising and enjoy exploring a wide variety of genres of music. They are all seasoned music educators and delight in working with others. The WC String Quartet has been together for ten years and has played at a variety of events.
They are all consummate musicians, educators, and are involved in arts organizations and projects across the region, bringing a creative and joyful spirit to their performances.
John Harrison started the violin at an early age; at age 11 played the Mendelssohn Concerto with the Boston Pops. He has recorded for Koch International Classics and New World Records and has been broadcast internationally on Public Radio International. John has taught at Wichita State University in both the Music and Engineering departments. Harrison is currently the concertmaster of the Wichita Symphony and CEO of his company Technology for Humanity which produces Filimin touch lamps.
Rob Loren toured as a fiddler/violinist with country legend Ray Price, and has worked with artists as diverse as Charlie Daniels, Johnny Mathis, Jerry Hahn, Phil Keaggy, and other nationally known artists. He works regularly throughout the Midwest playing chamber and symphonic music, as well as folk, country, jazz and popular styles.
Dr. Elizabeth Wallace currently serves as director of the Wichita State University Suzuki Academy, section violin with the Wichita Symphony, and Principal Viola of the Wichita Grand Opera. Dr. Wallace held fellowships at the Tanglewood Music Festival, Taos School of Music and Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival. She earned a Bachelors degree in violin performance from the University of Kansas, and a Doctorate in Viola Performance from Stony Brook University,. She is also the 1996 Kansas State Fiddle Champion.
Dr. Susan Mayo enjoys playing with diverse types of music and is currently teaches at Friends University. She pursued her undergraduate degree at the University of the Pacific (BM: Cello Performance) as well as doing graduate work at Peabody Conservatory of Music, and Wichita State University (BME in Special Music Education) and the University of Kansas (DMA in Cello Performance). She is also music director for both Symphony in the Flint Hills fall event Woodfest, and the Wichita Pop-Up Concert series VIBRANT ICT.
The WC String Quartet plays a variety of styles of music with an emphasis on intricate folks and popular rhythms and improvisation. Featuring styles from around the world they create an individual and unique sound. They are adept at engaging with their audience; interlacing interesting stories about composers and genres as they perform. The WC String Quartet is a fresh look at the classical genre of the string quartet that audiences of all types and ages will enjoy.
The quartet would be suitable for a wide variety of venues including concert series, festivals, university campuses, senior and retirement facilities, and public schools.
All members of the quartet are seasoned music educators. Possible workshops and masterclasses could cover topics including string pedagogy, chamber music coaching, private lessons, improvisation workshops, and presentations on various types of folk rhythms and styles.
